Permanent capital · Long-term stewardship

Permanent capital for enduring businesses.

We invest in mature businesses that serve critical market functions and are positioned for significant related, but orthogonal, growth. Then we hold them indefinitely.

01 — Philosophy

What we believe about investing

I

The present builds the future.

The foundations of the present are the building blocks of the future. Established businesses that the market relies on today are where tomorrow's growth starts.

II

Differentiation is earned.

Differentiated risk-adjusted returns can only come from differentiated strategy, process, and effort. We don't expect different results from doing what everyone else does.

III

Find the gems. Keep them.

We look for the hidden gems of the investable universe and look after them for the very long term, holding our investments for indefinite periods.

02 — Purpose

Why we do this

The economy is stronger when good businesses are smartly stewarded.

  1. Stewardship strengthens the economy

Good businesses employ people, serve customers, and anchor their communities. When they are owned with care and skill, the benefits reach well beyond their own balance sheets.

  2. Owners deserve a better exit

Traditional private equity offers an inadequate exit model for many of today's small but valuable private businesses. Too often, owners must choose between a buyer planning its own exit and no sale at all. We offer another path.

  3. People, not just properties

Investing in people, in addition to properties, is the key to unlocking sustainable growth. It creates value for a wide circle of stakeholders: employees, customers, suppliers, and communities, as well as investors.

What drives us

Every good product and every strong business exists because of a series of miracles.

The right idea, the right people, and years of effort have to come together, and they rarely do. We feel an impulse to protect the miraculous. Stewarding these products and businesses into the future is how we act on it.

03 — Approach

How we invest

What we look for

  • Maturity. Established businesses with a proven record.
  • Necessity. Companies that serve critical functions in their markets.
  • Orthogonal growth. Room for significant growth adjacent to, but distinct from, the core business.
  • Quality worth keeping. A business whose character is worth preserving as it grows.

Investing in assets, not through them

Our capital comes from family offices with permanent capital. That lets us invest in a business rather than through it. There is no fund life to work around, no exit to engineer, and no pressure to sell a good business before its time.

We judge an investment by what it becomes over decades, not by what it fetches at a predetermined sale.
